Family Camping

Last weekend, my entire family of 20 went camping.  Well, I say "camping" very loosely because we stayed in air-conditioned cabins, so not quite sure that can officially be considered camping.  Anyways, the 20 of us went to a Jellystone Park in Fremont, Indiana, and although any Jellystone is somewhat of a cheesy place, it was a perfect fit for this family with 10 grandkids between the ages of one and six.  The kids all had such a blast with non-stop playtime with their cousins (they kept saying to each other, "You're my BFF, my BEST friend forever!"), and the adults enjoyed the time together, too.  We ate and played and swam all day long, and when the kids were too tired to function anymore, we tucked them into sleeping bags and sat around the fire together at night.  Perfect combo.  We went mini-golfing, played at several different playgrounds, went to the pool, the splashpad, and the beach.  Some of the kids went fishing, and we ate many, many meals on picnic tables, plates overflowing with all the good food we had (WAY too much food!).  We listened to music, drank sangrias, and made smores.  We chased kids down the street, solved a few squabbles, and rescued them from mishaps at the pool (yes, yes, this would be my children and I  believe I am only able to joke about it because this is typing and not saying it out loud).  All five men went golfing one day, and the next day, all five women went out for an adventure of our own which ended at an ice cream parlor and an art gallery in the middle of a teeny tiny town in Ohio.  It was lovely.  All of it was lovely.  So here's to our time together!  Here's to cousins and camping and perfect weather and to generous parents who make this all happen.  Here's to summer and to family!  Very, very thankful.

Most places we walked, it looked like this...

Train ride around the campground!

Jumping pillows in which children AND adults all had a blast jumping.  Lots of laughter here!  SO fun!

Yep!  This is my amazing and fun and gorgeous mama!

Sophia loved the pool...and she loves Auntie Katie!

Ella jumping off the side of the pool over and over and over and over....

Apparently we were laughing...

Sammy's favorite person to swim with was Auntie Kim.

Girls!

Fishing with Daddy!

All of the kids touching a fish Nolan caught.

Sophia helping with the bobbers.

Savannah's catch!

Campfire time...How cute are they holding hands???  Love.

Sophia so sweet in her camping chair RIGHT before she toppled foreword and face-planted into the gravel.  So so sad, but she was a trooper.

Parktime!  The beauty of camping: you can go to the park in your jammies and no one cares!

Dawson and Ella...our two peanuts sharing the stroller seat.

Beach time!

Sophia's own, personal kiddie pool at the beach.

ALL TEN KIDS!  This is an accomplishment, people!

We let the boys stay up late to play mini-golf, go to the arcade, and do some sparklers by the fire our last night there.  The boys thought this was super cool.

So thankful for this time.  Lots of memories made!  What have you been up to this summer??  Do share!

Fourth of July Happiness

This is one of those weekends where I couldn't stop being so very thankful for summer and family and friends.  It has been a full-to-the-brim weekend, packed with Fourth of July festivities, visits with old friends from out of town, sunscreen, watermelon, popsicles, smores, sparklers, picnics, barbeques, and swim suits.  It has been summer at its best.  We have been with family daily, and my kids (and I!) have soaked up time with their cousins, laughing and playing together, hugging, chatting, and making memories.  Love it all.
Here are pictures from our weekend.  You wouldn't believe how many I am NOT including.  I know there are a lot, but I couldn't help myself.  This weekend had way too many moments needing to be captured.

Fireworks on the night of the 3rd, just the six of us.  Sweet time.

Fourth of July...kids in their red, white, and blue!

Flag fruit kabob
Barbeque at my parents' house...all the cousins enjoying dinner together
Red, white, and blue popsicles...a must on the 4th!
The flag cake my amazing sister made
July 5th...some of our dearest friends from Minnesota were in Chicago for the weekend and came over for a barbeque!  So fun to have the seven of them join us!  We always seem to just pick up where we left off, and it was fun to talk and laugh all night!

Sparklers at the end of the night
July 6th...Farmers Market with cousins...Micah and Savannah climbing trees
About to walk through the market together!
My favorite part...creating our own $5 bouquet of flowers.  Each child helped pick flowers that we put together for one gorgeous bouquet!
Hug break!
Final product!

Picnic lunch
My two nephews were here from Michigan and we got to have them overnight.  So fun to watch the kids play together in the backyard pool!
Ella so proud of herself after braving the sprinkler!
July 7th...the Crystal Lake parade!!!!!!!  All ten cousins (9 faces and the back of Sophia's head)!  Love them all!

Very special to think that my family and I were at this same parade every year of my childhood, and here we are, still at the parade, but now with our kids!  So special.
One of my favorite pictures of the weekend...my big brother with my little girl.  Speechless.
Soph being silly for the camera, saying, "CHEESE!"
And this pretty much sums up our weekend...all tuckered out!!!
The girls were asleep after the parade before we even got to our car.  Headed home for a dinner of leftovers, baths, and early bedtime for all.

Thankful thankful thankful.

Love summer.  Love family.  Love it all.

Cooking Club - Part 1!

This past week, we had our first-ever cooking club.  A few of my closest girlfriends and I have been doing a book study together for a few years now, and when we first started hearing about Shauna Niequist's newest book, Bread and Wine, we knew it would be so much fun to do the whole experience together.  So we did!  We read the first part of the book and followed her plan for the cooking club which includes a meal plan and recipes.  We split up the meal, brought all of our ingredients to my friend Lindsay's house, and dove in!
Jen chopping onions for the risotto
We cooked and laughed and talked and sipped wine and had such a blast trying new recipes and creating foods we didn't even know how to pronounce.  It was exactly how I would have imagined it being...and better!  Bumping into one another in the kitchen, flipping pages of the book to find the right recipes, chatting about what we had read, and laughing so hard along the way.
Katie and Lindsay
The four of us...about to dive in and start cooking!
When an unexpected phone call came in about someone's coworker and close friend in the hospital, we stopped, cried, prayed, and then quietly kept cooking.  It was such a picture of real life lived together...talking, laughing, crying, praying, celebrating, mourning, all in the space of one evening.
Crushing black peppercorns with the bottom of the cast iron pan

The risotto simmering...this was something none of us had ever made!
After all of our food was prepared, we sat at the table Lindsay had beautifully set and enjoyed the nicest sit-down dinner ever!  We marveled the whole time about how wonderful everything tasted and how fun it was to cook together.

Our final meal: Salad with  Basic Vinaigrette dressing, Basic Risotto, and Steak au Poivre with Cognac Pan Sauce

Blueberry Crisp
I already can't wait for our next cooking club night in July!  What a treat.  I couldn't remember the last time I had so much fun and that I laughed so hard.

I think Shauna would be proud.

What's becoming clearer and clearer to me is that the most sacred moments, the ones in which I feel God's presence most profoundly, when I feel the goodness of the world most arrestingly, take place at the table....What happens around the table doesn't matter to a lot of people.  But it matters more and more to me.  Life at the table is life at its best to me, and the spiritual significance of what and how we eat, and with whom and where, is new and profound to me every day.  I believe God is here among us, present and working.  I believe all of life is shot through with God's presence, and that part of the gift of walking with him is seeing his fingerprints in all sorts of unexpected ways.                                         - Shauna Niequist, Bread and Wine
